Sa Ta Na Ma, Mantra for Change


One of the first mantra mediations Yogi Bhajan taught when he came to the states was Kirtan Kriya using the mantra Sa Ta Na Ma. It is considered one of the most important mantras in Kundalini Yoga. 

It is a mantra for change, a mantra for evolution and a mantra to break addictions. 

It works to deeply clean the subconscious mind. It creates balance in the mind and resets the pituitary and pineal gland.

Sa Ta Na Ma

Translation:
Saa = Infinity, totality of the Cosmos
Taa = Life (birth of form from the Infinity)
Naa = death (or transformation)
Maa = Rebirth
More Information:

Panj means five, and expresses the five primal sounds of the Universe. (SSS. MMM. TTT. NNN and AAA.) It is the atomic or Naad form of the mantra Sat Naam. It is used to increase intuition, balance the hemispheres of the brain and to create a destiny for someone when there was none. This mantra describes the continuous cycle of life and creation.

This mantra is a great catalyst for change.

Kirtan Kriya

Sit straight in easy pose as shown. Meditate at the brow point (third eye) and produce the five primal sounds:  Sa, Ta, Na, Ma. 

Dristi: Eyes are closed and focused at the brow point, which stimulates the pineal-pituitary centers within the brain.

Mantra: Saa, Taa, Naa, Maa.

Mudra: On "Saa" touch the index finger (Jupiter finger) with the thumb tip with pressure.
On "Taa" touch the middle finger (Saturn finger) with the thumb tip with pressure.
On "Naa" touch the ring finger (Sun finger) with the thumb tip with pressure.
On "Maa" touch the little finger (Mercury finger) with the thumb tip with pressure.

Visualize or feel each individual sound come in the crown chakra at the top of the head, down through the middle of the head and out to infinity through the third eye in the pathway of the letter 'L'. (If this part of the meditation is not done, you may experience a headache.) 

Time:

31 Minute Version

Begin the kriya in a normal voice for 5 minutes; then whisper for 5 minutes; silently for 10 minutes. Then come back to a whisper for 5 minutes, then aloud for 5 minutes. 

11 Minute Version

Begin the kriya in a normal voice for 2 minutes; then whisper for 2 minutes; silently for 3 minutes. Then come back to a whisper for 2 minutes, then aloud for 2 minutes.

To End: This sequence will take 30 minutes. Follow with one 1 minute of stretching the arms over your head and spreading the fingers wide, shaking them out, circulating the energy, inhaling and exhaling 3 times. Relax.

A Note About Mudra

Mudra, hand seals are energetic seals which lock into your consciousness the effects of the meditation. 

Stimulates the nerve endings in the fingertips balancing the right and left hemispheres of the brain.

In this kriya we use mudra along mantra, for reference here are the effects associated with each finger mudra: 

Jupiter (pointer)Gyan Mudra -- knowledge, expands our field of possibilities, and releases us from limitations.

Saturn (middle): Shuni Mudra -- patience, wisdom and purity.

Sun (ring): Surya Mudra -- vitality and vigor.

Mercury (pinky): Buddhi Mudra -- aids clear communication.
