I am in love with mantra. Seriously. It moves me so deeply.
I feel like we're really lucky in the Kundalini Yoga practice to get to do it so much! Kundalini classes are filled with such amazing music and if you've ever been in a room full of people truly chanting from their hearts, you know what an incredibly experience it can be.
I traveled to Peru a couple years ago to work with Shaman in my own healing and one of the things that I learned in those sessions was the true and great force of mantra, of Naad, or sound current. While all sound has vibration, Naad is the sound current of the Universe, it is the sound that formed all of creation.
This is our source, this is our beginning. We are all born of sound. When you truly consider that you start to get a picture of just how powerful Mantra is.
I have had my own, very powerful healing using mantra which you can read about HERE.
Yogi Bhajan's words on mantra:
“We have totally forgotten that this Universe is the outcome of vibration. This Universe is not communication. This Universe is not money. This Universe is not love, it is not sex, it is not beauty, it is not even God. That one line is true: "In the beginning there was the Word, Word was with God, and Word was God." That's all it is about. What is a word? Creative vibration.”
"We meditate so that our minds can be sharp and alert. We chant mantras so that your souls may be ignited like candles. We walk in the light of this beauty."
"Mantras are not small things, mantras have power. They are the mind vibration in relationship to the Cosmos. The science of mantra is based on the knowledge that sound is a form of energy having structure, power, and a definite predictable effect on the chakras and the human psyche."
“Just see how powerful a mantra can be. All the stars and the Universe are very powerful, I am not disagreeing with the powers. But, by chanting a mantra, just see how powerful you can be.”
“What is a mantra? Mantra is two words: “Man” and “tra.” “Man” means mind. “Tra” means the heat of life. “Ra” means sun. So, mantra is a powerful combination of words which, if recited, takes the vibratory effect of each of your molecules into the Infinity of the Cosmos. That is called “Mantra".”
This is a cool demonstration of how sound works as vibration:
In my experience, there can be an even deeper expression of Naad that relates to the connectedness of the person doing the mantra. Mantra is a meditation, and the deeper one's connection to that pure sound current, the more Spirit -- or pure universal energy -- can be transmitted through the mantra itself.
This is like coming in to contact with a very awakened person. There is an energetic transmission that shifts the collective energy around them just by their presence alone. When someone is truly tuned into the Naad, their voice acts in a similar way, becoming a vehicle for us all.
One yogi today who does this magnificently is Simrit Kaur. You can feel the devotion, the connection, the soul in her music. I have been listening to her mantra for years and have had the pleasure of hearing live at Solstice during sadhana several times.
Her music is captivating. It sweeps you up and takes you to other worlds, to the place of sound current, of divine vibration.
What a beautiful thing when talent and devotion come together in such a mesmerizing way! Not only does Simrit have the ability to transmit truth through her song, but she really understands this amazing technology.
I just saw she is doing an online course for mantra. If you are interested in deepening your practice - or getting to know it for the first time I would definitely check it out: 5 Secrets of Supreme Sound
You can listen to her talk about the power of mantra in her own life:
